Costa del sol is a region which includes coastal towns and small villages in the western part of the Malaga province in southern Spain, the region of Andalucia. The name is often translated to ”the sun coast” in norwegian language. Earlier the coast had small calm fishermans villages, but the region was totaly changed during the last half of the twentieth century. It is now a world famous tourist area. Costa del Sol stretches westwards along the mediterranean coast from Nerja, past Malaga to the Cadiz province. Here we find cities such as Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, San Pedro de Alcantara, Velez-Malaga, Nerja, Torrox, Puerto Banus and Estepona.

There have been settlers here since the bronze ages, and the area has been dominated by foreigners from different cultures such as cartagenans, romans, vandals, westgoethers and maurers, before ”Reconquista”. The area was discovered by the tourist industry in the nineteen fifties, and has since then been a popular destination for foreign tourists, both seeking cultural experiences and sunny beaches. The area is largely urbanized and populated all along the coastline. The architectural style is a blend of small white houses and large skyscrapers, especially in the typical tourist cities.
