Description
Historically, Torrevieja was built on the strength and prosperity of the salt lakes and was once a sleepy coastal fishing village. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 1829, rebuilt and has subsequently become one of the best-known resorts on the southern Costa Blanca after Benidorm, with a population reaching into the 100.000´s and much higher at holiday and Fiesta times. Torrevieja is famous for its Salt Lakes which are still today, a major producer of salt and shipped world-wide. It is suggested that the salt lakes contribute to the wonderful healthy climate in this area.
Torrevieja is a real melting pot of cultures, not just by its international feel, but due to its mix of new and old Spanish attitudes. Traditions such as the siesta is still an important aspect of Spanish lifestyle, so don’t expect much in the way of shopping or business between 2 and 5 pm!
The town is a vibrant, eclectic mix of locals and foreigners alike, it is one of the fastest growing towns in Spain attracting a plethora of visitors from all around the globe and is one of the most established travel destinations known to Europeans.
It is home to “Paseo de Mar” built on a plot of 20, 000m2, located adjacent to the port, a leisure and entertainment centre with a modern marina accommodating over 600 boat berths. The centre includes a promenade, boardwalk and parking area for over 650 vehicles. In addition, there is a commercial area called “Habaneras” which has over 27 premises for local businesses, movie theatre, bowling alley, a selection of restaurants and well-known fast-food franchises.
There are several new modern residential developments in Torrevieja within walking distance to the beach, and the large-scale “Laguna Village” project, with 1.800 attractive new homes, including luxury apartments, bungalows and modern villas. Nestled in a stunning natural setting between the lagunas de la Mata natural park and laguna Rosa in Torrevieja. This magnificent village has its own roads, cycle lanes, avenues, wonderful green areas and a Sport & Wellness Club offering an abundance of both indoor and outdoor facilities.
A cycle ride away from La Mata beach which is one of the most popular of the area and recognised of blue flag. It’s the longest beach of Torrevieja from Cabo Cervera to the dunes of Guardamar del Segura. Torrevieja town is only 35 min drive away from the Airport Alicante
