The Costa Cálida (Warm Coast) is an extensive Mediterranean coastline in the Murcia region of southern Spain, stretching from Pilar de la Horadada to south of the coastal town of Águilas that borders the region of Almería province. It is known for its great climate and beautiful beaches.
At the northern end it has a 170-square kilometre shallow saltwater lagoon called The Mar Menor”, which is Europe´s largest and without doubt one of the most impressive natural marvels to be found. The water is calm and quite shallow and warmer than the neighbouring Mediterranean sea, making it perfect for families with young children. The lagoon’s internal coastline has resulted in a collection of charming small villages and towns, from San Pedro del Pinatar in the north Santiago de la Ribiera, Los Alcázares, Punta Brava, Islas Menores, to Mar de Cristal and Playa Honda on the Mar Menor.
In the town of San Pedro del Pinatar, you will discover Las Charcas Mud Baths, part of the Mar Menor, called the “Sea of Health”, this area is renowned for its shallow depths, high salinity, providing visitors with unparalleled access to the therapeutic healing earth mud that makes up the ground of the lagoon.
Separated from the Mediterranean by a 22 km-long spit of land called “La Manga” of which is most famous for its spectacular golf courses. On the La Manga Strip itself, which directly overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, are tourist developments such as Manga Beach, La Manga del Mar Menor and Cabo Palos a typical Spanish fishing village. Further inland Torre Pacheco, Roldan, Santa Rosalia Lake and Life Resort, Balsicas and Fortuna are other areas that have a high concentration of expatriates.
Murcia the capital city of the Costa Calida, is an inland treasure and often described as one of the most beautiful and historic in the country, with a great selection of historic buildings, impressive city walls, the Cathedral Santa Maria and the high-end shopping at the Uber-cool El Corte Ingles Store. Murcia city is 45 min drive from Alicante airport, 15 min from Corvera Murcia International airport. Murcia is also great for attractions boasting a “Terra Natura Park” and has many wine regions including Yecla, Jumilla & Bullas all noted for producing some of the finest wines in the world.
Although the Costa Calida is not as well-known as the Costa Blanca, it attracts thousands of people, especially golf lovers. There are many PGA championship courses and the world famous 5-star luxury resort, La Manga Club, with its three 18-hole courses and world class accommodation situated close to the southern shores of the Mar Menor. For Golf enthusiasts and professionals, you can play on 25 + top quality courses in a radius of 50 km. It’s also long been a popular spot with property-hunters and expats, especially since the now world-famous resort of La Manga opened in 1972 - the first resort in Spain with three golf courses.
With more than 300 days of sunshine throughout the year, Costa Calida is the ideal place for practicing all sorts of outdoor activities, such as golf, water sports like sailing, fishing, scuba diving, snorkelling, kiting and windsurfing.
